What is CNG?
CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. CNG is obtained from the national transmission network or urban distribution system by compressing it as gas under a pressure of approximately 200-250 bar.
CNG is an odorless, colorless and non-toxic gas phase fuel. It is transported and stored in gas phase under high pressure. It is offered for consumption in the gas phase by decreasing the pressure.
About CNG;
In most European countries, natural gas is called Methane. It contains small amounts of hydrocarbons such as Ethane, Propane, Butane, and pentane. Its Chemical Formula is CH4. While the methane rate in Algerian natural gas is 83%, the methane rate in Russian natural gas is 98%. Like crude oil, natural gas is underground or on the ocean floor and can be reached by drilling a well. Contrary to crude oil, natural gas can be used as fuel without much refining. In urban areas, utilities use low pressure (4 Bar) pipelines to distribute natural gas to homes and businesses as gas.
In the researches, since natural gas does not contain substances that harm the environment such as lead, sulfur oxide and particles as in gasoline and diesel, it does not have negative effects such as air pollution, people's breathing lead and greenhouse effect pollutant gas, and with the use of natural gas as fuel, 99% of these negativities It is predicted to decrease in rate.
It is the cleanest naturally occurring fossil fuel. Its history is very old. It has been used more intensively since 1930. With the large natural gas reserves in Russia, North Africa and the Middle East, today it has become the third largest energy source after oil and coal. Natural gas, which mainly contains methane, is one of the most abundant energy sources in the world. CNG Usage Areas;
The most intensive use of compressed natural gas in the world is the transportation area. High fuel prices, octane value of 120-125 octane, ensuring clean and complete combustion, extending the life of the engine as a result of not mixing with oil, not causing an increase in fuel consumption over time, and low explosion hazard compared to other fuels (5% - 15% Air-Gas mixture ratio) have made CNG a promoted fuel. According to the data of The Natural & Bio Gas Vehicle Association (NGVA Europe), an increase of 2.5% in natural gas passenger cars and 4.1% in transport trucks was observed in the world between 1990 and 2017. 250000 natural gas vehicles are used in the USA, 1600000 in China, 2250000 in Argentina and 1750000 in Brazil. About 80 percent of the CNG passenger fleet is comprised of Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Pakistan and India. The European Union (EU) aims to meet 23 percent of its fuel consumption from natural gas, with its 2020 targets. Globally, and particularly in the Asia Pacific region, compressed natural gas (CNG) is a popular fuel choice for public transit buses and delivery truck fleets.
Is CNG Used In Diesel Vehicles?
It is used in diesel vehicles by using diesel and CNG together, which is called single fuel and dual system. With some revisions made on the diesel engine in single fuel systems, the diesel engine is made to operate with CNG and the system is presented to the user. In the dual system, the CNG conversion kit is installed on the diesel engine, enabling the vehicle to work with 30% diesel and 70% CNG at the same time.
